Our skincare newsletter will update you every month with new additions to the website, interesting news articles or trends in skincare and of course, a great deal, coupon or giveaway. The 411= Information We give you "The 411 On Skincare"! Tip Of The Month It's July and time to liberate your skin from all your bad habits! No more picking at blemishes, start wearing sunscreen every day and take your makeup off every night. Simple habits that will have your skin looking and feeling healthier all year long! Sun-Safe Summer Skincare July has been dubbed The American Cancer Society's "UV Safety Month." Since beach weather (thankfully) doesn't wait until July, you should know that you can have your cake and eat it too when it comes to a golden glow without the risks. We all know by now that we need SPF, and with many makeup and face creams including at least SPF 15 already built in, that's already a step in the right direction for many of us. I actually took a look around on my last shopping trip, and realized that it was almost harder to specifically find foundation or tinted moisturizer containing zero sun protection. Now, if your not one to wear makeup to the beach or say, for an outdoor jog you really must get familiar with a good facial sun block in addition to one for body. Alba Botanica's sun care line is a great choice for both, offering non-chemical protection up to SPF 45, and is loved by shoppers who choose natural products either for green reasons or skin sensitivity issues. So what about the newer SPF 90+ lotions out there? While those with very fair, sun sensitive skin may want/need to go high with SPF, Dr. Edward Lack (Chicago rhinoplasty, dermatology) warns that this can become more of a marketing gimmick to make you feel like you need a higher and higher number whenever its available. Reapplying to keep that protection barrier on your skin strong is key, and will do a much better job than applying an extremely high SPF once and allowing it to wear off. "Ideally you put on sunscreen an hour before going outside, then reapply it just before exposure. If you will maintain direct exposure as on the golf course or on a boat put the sunscreen on again every 2 hours," Dr. Lack advises as a general rule. Now that you are refreshed on staying adequately protected, we mustn't forget the sunless tanner. If you're a recovering sunbathing addict and haven’t tried one yet, now is the time; and sticking to some cult favorites will ensure a seamless transition into a faux glow with no looking back. Lavera's sunless lotion is THE organic choice, while the entire Clarins' line is highly recommendable- a favorite being the Self Tanning Instant Gel for a fast dash of color with no mess as you walk out the door in the morning. What's not to love?

Keeping Elderly Skin Healthy The skin of the elderly is highly prone to a number of diseases and disorders because of its decreased elasticity, thickness, and because of certain illnesses the elderly tend to have. One of the most common problems that affects the skin is congestive heart failure, which is the inability of the heart to expel sufficient blood to keep pace with the metabolic demands of the body. In the healthy individual, the heart can tolerate large increases of workload for a considerable length of time, but in an elderly person who has this problem it can have a negative effect on the skin's ability to heal. Because of these reasons, it is critical to keep elderly skin healthy and protected. There are many other causes for compromised skin including incontinence, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and treating wounds. The good news is that some skin problems can be prevented by adhering to a few basic principles. One of the most important steps is making sure that your elderly loved one has a highly nutritional diet. If there is a suspected problem, a consultation with a dietician may be recommended. The dietician can work with both the elderly patient and the caregiver to determine the best way to increase the nutritional value of the elderly person’s diet, and thereby improve the condition of his or her skin. If supplements are called for, there is a wide variety of nutritional supplements in easy to use forms, such as puddings, powders and juices, which help enable easy digestion. Direct care of the skin is especially crucial as well. Usually a three step process to maintain healthy skin is recommended – remember CMP - Cleanse, Moisturize and Protect. There are a number of products that can be used to care for the skin of the elderly. Cleansing - Everyone needs to keep their skin clean to be healthy, and the elderly are no exception. Using a gentle foam cleanser is recommended to remove residue. Studies show that skin that is regularly and gently cleansed is less likely to breakdown and have problems. The CareGiver Partnership offers only professional grade skin care products used by medical professionals. Moisturizing - After cleansing, the next important step is moisturizing. Due to the natural process of aging, and sometimes because of certain diseases or conditions, the elderly tend to suffer from extremely dry skin. Using a healing moisturizer is recommended. Skin Protection – After the skin is cleaned and moisturized, a protectant should be used, especially if incontinence is involved. If left untreated, incontinence can cauase the skin to quickly break down, and numerous problems arise as a result. This is especially crucial since all elderly skin is far more fragile than someone who is younger. You can check some of the medical grade products used by professionals at www.caregiverpartnership.com/products-skin-care.aspx. Problem skin - The elderly are also much more susceptible to having problems with their skin including eczema, rosacea and psoriasis. Products to treat these problems can be found at www.caregiverpartnership.com/lp-triderma.aspx. Wound care - This often becomes an issue for the elderly. This is especially true if your loved one is diabetic. Many diabetics have a very difficult time healing, and often need extended care for their skin. In addition if a senior has had surgery or other medical intervention, then skin can need extra care while healing. Your loved one may need products that can help with the relief of general skin irritations, pressure sores, diabetic ulcers, burns (including radiation from cancer treatment), and any other skin irritation. At www.caregiverpartnership.com they offer a wide variety of products and helpful resources that can help with these special circumstances. Well, it's the middle of summer so I'm surprised you're not outside getting tan! :) There is a lot of debate on the safety of tanning beds, so you really must pick and choose what is important to you. Yes, using a tanning bed for prolonged periods of time without a sunscreen can lead to an increased risk of skin cancer. Often these clients will also use an accelerant to increase their darkness and speed of tan. However, there are many people who have been prescribed by a medical doctor to use a tanning bed to relieve depression, psoriasis, ezcema and other skin conditions. Many times these patients will use a sunscreen so their risk of skin cancer is lowered. There are many strengths of beds and time limits you may be in a bed so it is best to speak with a tanning bed expert to choose the right solution for your needs. Today, July 1, the "Tanning Tax" passed by Congress has gone into effect so it is now an additional 10% tax on top of your state tax, if any.
